Consumer Price Index August 2022 Falls from its Highest Level

Indonesia's Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August 2022 decreased from its peak, as shown in the graph.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that the general CPI for 90 cities stood at 111.57 in August 2022. This figure shows a month-on-month (mom) deflation of 0.21% compared to the previous month, based on the 2018 CPI = 100 calculation.

This monthly deflation was triggered by a decrease in prices in the food, beverages, and tobacco expenditure group by 1.8% (mom), the transportation group by 0.8% (mom), and the information and communication group by 0.03% (mom).

The deflation in the food expenditure group was driven by a decrease in the prices of volatile food commodities such as chilies, shallots, and garlic. Previously, the prices of these commodities had surged due to reduced harvests caused by adverse weather conditions.

Despite the month-on-month decrease, the current index of goods and services is still 3.63% higher than the year-to-date (ytd) position and 4.69% higher than a year ago (year-on-year/yoy).

Annually, inflation in the food, beverages, and tobacco expenditure group remains the highest at 7.73% (yoy). This is followed by the transportation group at 6.62% (yoy), and personal care and other services at 4.95% (yoy).
