Bekasi Regent, Neneng Hassanah Yasin, was caught in a sting operation (OTT) by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Sunday, October 14, 2018. The sting operation was related to a bribery case involving permits for the Meikarta project. PT Mahkota Sentosa Utama (MSU), the developer of Meikarta, is a subsidiary of PT Lippo Cikarang Tbk. The arrest of the Bekasi Regency regional government official and Lippo Group executives adds to the long list of public officials and private sector figures caught by the KPK.
According to KPK data, 22 private sector officials/employees were caught in corruption-related offenses between January and June 2018. From 2004 to June 2018, a total of 204 private sector officials/employees were involved in corruption cases. Despite the KPK's frequent arrests for corruption offenses, officials seem undeterred from accepting bribes to facilitate business permits for private companies. Meanwhile, four companies have been implicated in corruption cases: one in 2017 and three in 2018.
Last week, the KPK also successfully conducted a sting operation involving a bribery case committed by PT Binasawit Abadi Pratama (BAP), a subsidiary of the Sinarmas Group, against a member of the Central Kalimantan Provincial DPRD (Regional People's Representative Council). The KPK secured Rp 240 million in bribe money from BAP intended for the head of Commission B of the Central Kalimantan DPRD and an associate, at a shopping mall in Central Jakarta. This bribery case is related to problematic palm oil business permits for BAP in Seruyan Regency.
