Papua's Economic Growth Soared to 15.11% in 2021

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that Papua's economy, measured by Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices, reached Rp235.34 trillion in 2021.

Measured by GRDP at constant 2010 prices, Papua's economy grew by 15.11% to Rp158.61 trillion in 2021 compared to the previous year. This achievement is far above the 2.39% growth in 2020 and represents the highest growth in the last decade.

By industry sector, the largest contribution to Papua's 2021 GRDP came from mining and quarrying at 36.84%, followed by construction at 13.8%, and agriculture at 10.8%.

The mining and quarrying sector recorded very significant growth of 40.80% throughout 2021 compared to the previous year.

Other sectors experiencing the highest growth were real estate at 7.04%, and electricity and gas supply at 5.77%.

From the expenditure side, household consumption was the largest contributing sector, reaching 39.66% of Papua's GRDP. This was followed by gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) at 32.43%, and government consumption expenditure at 18.25%.

The foreign export component recorded the highest growth, reaching 105.14% last year. This was followed by gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) growth of 18.53%, and household non-profit institutions' (NPISH) consumption expenditure growth of 4.95%.

Previously, Papua's GRDP experienced a significant contraction of 15.74% in 2019 due to a decline in mining activity in the province.
