A Reuters Institute poll reveals that a significant number of respondents in Asia-Pacific countries enjoy watching short online news videos in early 2024.
Thailand ranked first, with 87% of respondents indicating this preference. The Reuters Institute calculated this as nearly 9 out of 10 people enjoying short online news videos weekly.
"Half (50%) said they do so every day," the research team wrote in a report cited on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
India followed with 81%, then Hong Kong at 80%.
The Philippines also registered 80%. Taiwan and Indonesia both scored 78%.
South Korea followed at 76%, and Malaysia at 74%. The three countries with the lowest proportions were Singapore (59%), Australia (54%), and Japan (39%).
In previous research, the *Digital News Report* 2021 and 2023, the research team demonstrated that regarding online news, most audiences still prefer text due to its flexibility and control. However, the team noted this doesn't mean that video—especially short-form video—isn't becoming a larger part of media consumption patterns.
The research team stated that two-thirds, or 66%, of all countries surveyed said they access short news videos. Short videos were defined as videos lasting a few minutes or less than a minute, used at least once a week.
"Higher proportions are outside the US and Western Europe," the research team wrote.
Americans accessed short news videos less frequently, with 60% weekly and 20% daily. The British consumed the least short-form news, at 39% weekly and only 9% daily.
This survey covered 47 countries with a total sample size of 94,943 people. Each surveyed country had a sample size exceeding 2,000 respondents. This *Study of Journalism* was conducted by YouGov using an online questionnaire in late January-early February 2024.
