Indonesia's Food Industry Dominated by Micro and Small Enterprises 2024

According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), in 2024, the number of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Indonesia reached 4,413,443.

BPS then broke down the data by type of business. The food industry, under Indonesian Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI) 10, dominated with a total of 1,942,850 enterprises in 2024. This accounts for 44% of the total MSEs in Indonesia.

Next is the apparel industry (KBLI code 14), with 594,597 units, or 13% of the total MSEs.

Then there is the wood industry (KBLI 16), with 526,854 units, or 12%. This industry includes wood and cork products (excluding furniture) and woven goods made from bamboo, rattan, and similar materials.

The textile industry accounted for 238,222 units, and other processing industries for 237,731 units.

Mapped by province, East Java recorded the highest number, with 925,985 units, or 20.98% of the total MSEs.

Central Java followed with 887,559 enterprises. West Java came in third with 640,316 enterprises.

BPS defines micro industries as manufacturing companies with 1-4 employees.

Meanwhile, small industries are defined as manufacturing companies with 5-19 employees.
