KESGI 2025: Highest Sustainability Scores in the Plantation and Energy Sectors

An independent assessment by the Katadata Insight Center (KIC) in the *Katadata Environmental, Social, and Governance Index* (KESGI) 2025 reveals a disparity in the implementation of ESG sustainability frameworks across eight industrial sectors in Indonesia.

The plantation and energy sectors lead the rankings, while the transportation and logistics sector lags behind. The following are the KESGI 2025 median scores for the eight industrial sectors on a scale of 0-100 points:

• Plantations: 64.60
• Energy: 63.18
• Mining: 58.21
• Chemicals: 53.70
• Hospitality: 50.37
• Banking: 47.64
• Food and beverage: 47.53
• Transportation and logistics: 40.67

“These figures reflect the sectors' ability to address environmental and social challenges while strengthening more robust governance structures,” wrote KIC in its report, quoted on Friday (September 12, 2025).

According to KIC, the plantation, energy, and mining sectors are frequently under public and regulatory scrutiny. However, this external pressure has spurred companies in these sectors to improve their ESG performance.

Meanwhile, the food and beverage and transportation and logistics sectors, despite having direct exposure to the public and the environment, show lower overall scores than expected.

“This could indicate that ESG adaptation in these sectors may still be hampered by supply chain dynamics, operational cost pressures, or even a lack of internal systems ready to fully drive the sustainability agenda,” stated KIC.

KESGI is an independent assessment to measure the sustainability performance of publicly listed companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI), as well as several state-owned enterprises that significantly contribute to the national economy.

The assessment is conducted on three main aspects: environmental, social, and governance. The basis for the KESGI 2025 assessment is the availability of data from the 2024 Sustainability Report or 2024 Annual Report publicly accessible through the company's official website by June 2025.

The sustainability reports prepared by the companies refer to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and follow the regulations of POJK No. 51/2017 concerning the Implementation of Sustainable Finance and SEOJK No. 16/2021 concerning the Form and Content of Annual Reports of Issuers or Public Companies.
