Indonesia's August 2025 Monthly Deflation at 0.08%: Contributing Commodities

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia experienced a monthly deflation of 0.08% (month-to-month/mtm) in August 2025. BPS assessed this as a seasonal pattern.

"Based on historical data from 2021-2025, deflation has occurred every August," said Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Distribution and Service Statistics at BPS, in an online press conference on Monday (September 1, 2025).

However, this deflation rate is lower than that of August 2023, which was 0.02% (mtm), and August 2024, which was 0.03% (mtm).

Based on commodities, tomatoes contributed the largest share to deflation, at 0.10% (mtm) in August 2025.

This was followed by chili peppers at 0.07% (mtm), airfare at 0.03% (mtm), and senior high school tuition fees at 0.02% (mtm).

BPS noted that deflation in the senior high school tuition fee category occurred in six provinces: Lampung, Bangka Belitung, Central Kalimantan, Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua.

"One of the factors is government provincial policies related to education, specifically school fees, tuition payments (SPP), and committee fees for state senior high schools/vocational schools/special needs schools," said Pudji.

In August 2025, monthly deflation occurred in 27 Indonesian provinces, while 11 other provinces experienced monthly inflation.

The highest monthly inflation occurred in North Sumatra Province at 1.37% (mtm). The deepest monthly deflation occurred in North Maluku at 1.90% (mtm).
