Reasons Why Indonesian Citizens Don't Invest: Lack of Funds to Halal Status

According to a survey by the Indonesian Public Opinion Discussion and Study Group (KedaiKOPI), at the beginning of 2025, 26.8% of 900 respondents in Indonesia did not have any investments.

Of those without investments, the majority, or 62.2% of respondents, stated that they did not have extra funds.

Furthermore, 41.5% did not invest due to a lack of knowledge, 38.6% feared losses, 29% did not know how to start, and 20.7% felt that investing was not a priority.

Some respondents also did not invest because of bad investment experiences, distrust of available investment products, perceived widespread fraud or crime in investing, or concerns about the halal status of investing.

The survey also found the types of investments respondents were interested in for the future. 47.3% of respondents were interested in property investments. Gold jewelry and gold bars were favored by 44.4% of respondents.

KedaiKOPI conducted this survey among 900 respondents aged 17-55 in Indonesia. Respondents consisted of 51.1% women and 48.9% men.

Data collection was conducted from February 20 to March 2, 2025, using the Online-Computerized Assisted Self Interview (CASI) method.

Note that this survey used a multiple-answer system, allowing respondents to select more than one answer.
