Generally, consumers still felt optimistic in the fourth quarter of 2017. This is reflected in the Consumer Tendency Index (CTI), which remained above 100. However, it was not as high as the optimism in the third quarter of 2017, where the CTI reached 109.42. The highest consumer optimism was recorded in East Nusa Tenggara with a CTI of 122.25, while the lowest was in East Kalimantan with a CTI of 97.91. Consumer optimism throughout the 2010-2017 period fluctuated and reached its highest level at the end of 2001 and its lowest in mid-2008.
The Indonesian consumer economic condition improved. The optimism and improved economic conditions in the fourth quarter of 2017 were driven by increased household income and consumption volume, with index values of 106.68 and 109.28 respectively. Furthermore, the inflation rate according to household consumers did not significantly affect the level of public consumption, as indicated by an index of 105.80.
The CTI provides an overview of the general business and economic situation obtained from the economic conditions of consumers as consumers of goods and services produced in the economy. The information collected includes household income, the influence of inflation, and the consumption of food and non-food commodities (clothing, housing costs, education costs, transportation, healthcare costs, recreation, and others). In addition, information on plans to purchase durable goods (houses/land, cars, TVs, computers, and others) was also collected.
