According to research by TIFA Foundation and Populix, 63% of Indonesian journalists surveyed reported experiencing news censorship. This censorship occurred across all media, both national and international.

The editorial team was cited as the most frequent source of censorship orders, according to 41% of respondents.

Next, censorship ordered by sponsors or clients was reported by 38% of respondents.

Censorship by media owners was reported by 30% of respondents, followed by censorship by civil society organizations (25%), the government (21%), and media management (HR and CEOs) (21%).

Furthermore, news censorship was also imposed by non-governmental state institutions such as law enforcement agencies (13%), and other parties (1%).

The Populix survey involved 536 active journalists, with 67% male and 33% female respondents. Based on employment status, the majority were full-time journalists (45%), contract journalists (36%), and contributing journalists (19%).

Respondents were spread across Java (44%), Sumatra (19%), Kalimantan (9%), Sulawesi (9%), Maluku-North Maluku (9%), Bali-Nusa Tenggara (6%), and Papua (5%).

Data collection was conducted from January 22 to February 13, 2024, using a self-filling method by the journalists.

The research employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. In addition to the survey, the research team also used secondary data on violence against journalists collected by the Indonesian Journalists Alliance (AJI).

Quantitative data came from focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews with various stakeholders in the journalism field.
