5 Popular Dine-In Restaurant Categories During the New Normal

The Mandiri Institute's research notes that a number of people have become confident enough to dine in at restaurants. At least five restaurant categories were most popular for dine-in during the new normal, with general restaurants being the most favored at 54.5%.

General restaurants are restaurants offering a diverse menu. This variety attracts more consumers, particularly those from the lower-middle class.

Following general restaurants are other restaurant categories (54.2%), fast food (52.7%), local restaurants (52.1%), and specialty restaurants. Specialty restaurants generally have specific menus. Only a segment of the population, mainly the upper-middle class, frequent these restaurants. Examples include Japanese food restaurants, steakhouses, and Western food restaurants.

This research was conducted from July to August 2020 using live tracking data from Google Maps across 5,968 stores and 7,531 restaurants in eight major cities. These cities include Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, Makassar, Medan, Surabaya, and Denpasar.
