2016, Vehicle Maintenance Business Dominates

Based on the 2016 Economic Census data, the Indonesian business sector is dominated by wholesale and retail trade, including repair and maintenance of cars and motorcycles, with 12.3 million businesses or 46.17 percent. The next largest business sector is accommodation and food service, reaching 4.46 million businesses, representing 16.72 percent. This is followed by the manufacturing industry with 4.41 million businesses or 16.53 percent.

Overall, the 2016 census recorded a total of 26.71 million businesses and companies (excluding the agricultural sector). This figure represents a 17.51 percent increase compared to the 2006 economic census, which recorded 22.73 million businesses. Of this total, 98.33 percent, or 26.26 million, are Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), while the remaining 1.67 percent, or 0.45 million, are categorized as large-scale businesses.
