Medan: City with the Worst Economic Governance in 2016

Medan was ranked as the city with the worst governance in 2016. Based on the 2016 Regional Economic Governance (REG) study, Medan received a score of 45.99, the lowest among the 32 surveyed cities. Jambi ranked second worst with a score of 48.43, followed by Bandar Lampung with a score of 48.91. All three scored below 50.

This poor performance of Medan's REG was due to low scores in sub-indices such as licensing (45), PPUS (24.76), capacity and integrity of regional heads (5.82), employment (31), and interaction between the regional government and businesses (12.11). The REG study aimed to provide an overview of the quality of economic governance in 32 provincial capital cities. The study did not include DKI Jakarta Province because it does not have a city/regency-level area as its capital. The economic governance score ranges from 0-100. The higher a region's score, the better its economic governance.
