According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 36 journalists were killed in the Israel-Palestine conflict as of November 5, 2023. This number has been recorded since the Hamas militant group launched an attack on Israel on October 7, and Israel retaliated against the Gaza Strip.
CPJ stated that it is investigating all reports of journalists and media workers killed, injured, or missing in the war, including those injured when hostilities spread to neighboring countries, such as Lebanon, as a result of the attacks.
“As of November 5, CPJ’s initial investigations indicate that at least 36 journalists and media workers are among the 11,000 people killed since the war began on October 7, with over 9,700 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank, and 1,400 in Israel,” said CPJ, as reported on its website on Sunday, November 5, 2023, local time.
According to CPJ, journalists in Gaza face extremely high risks when covering the conflict, facing Israeli ground attacks in Gaza City, devastating Israeli airstrikes, communication disruptions, and widespread power outages.
The following details the 36 journalists and media workers confirmed killed in the Israel-Palestine conflict by nationality as of November 5, 2023:
* 31 Palestinians
* 4 Israelis
* 1 Lebanese
CPJ also reported that 8 journalists were injured, 3 journalists are missing, and 8 journalists were arrested in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Furthermore, CPJ stated that there were also various attacks, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings of family members of journalists involved in coverage.
CPJ is also still investigating several unconfirmed reports regarding other journalists killed, missing, detained, injured, or threatened, and regarding damage to media offices and journalists' homes.
“CPJ emphasizes that journalists are civilians performing essential work during times of crisis and should not be targeted by warring parties,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator.
Sherif said that journalists across the region have made great sacrifices to cover the Israel-Palestine conflict. The people of Gaza, in particular, he continued, have suffered unprecedented losses and face immense threats.
“Many of them (journalists) have lost colleagues, family, and media facilities, and have fled to seek safety when there are no safe shelters or escape routes,” said Sherif.
