The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released its *Global Liveability Index 2022*. The results show that Vienna, the Austrian capital, has been named the most liveable city this year.
Vienna topped the 2022 Global Liveability Report with a score of 99.1, replacing Auckland, which held the top spot in 2021. Vienna ranked 12th in 2021 due to the closure of most of its museums and restaurants because of Covid-19.
According to the report, Western European and Canadian cities dominate the top rankings, while the rankings of Eastern European cities have slipped amid the escalating geopolitical crisis.
In this year's study, the EIU added 33 new cities as subjects of research, including Surabaya (Indonesia). Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was removed from the index due to the Russian invasion of the country.
The EIU's research ranks 173 cities worldwide using five indicators to measure a city's liveability: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. These five indicators have their own weighting in contributing to a city's score: 25 percent, 20 percent, 25 percent, 10 percent, and 20 percent, respectively.
