Mount Ibu Erupted on Thursday Afternoon, Its Status is Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (October 2, 2025) at 17:22 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 25 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 600 meters above the summit (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 63 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on October 2, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIT, showed 95 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 34-75 seconds.

Then, 2 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-11 millimeters and earthquake durations of 35-49 seconds, and 18 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and earthquake durations of 29-221 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a radius of 2 kilometers and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,504 volcano eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,546 times) while Mount Ibu erupted 2,340 times.
