Brebes Had the Largest Muslim Population in Central Java in 2021

The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs recorded that the Muslim population of Brebes Regency was 1.99 million as of December 31, 2021.

This number constitutes 99.74% of Brebes' total population and is the largest Muslim population among all regencies/cities.

The next largest Muslim population is in Cilacap Regency, with 1.95 million (98.68% of its total population), followed by Banyumas Regency with 1.79 million (98.43%).

In contrast, the Muslim population of Magelang City is only 108,880 (85.57%), the smallest among the 34 regencies/cities. Salatiga City follows with 156,100 Muslims (85.57%), and Tegal City with 278,370 (96.61%).

Central Java's Muslim population totaled 36.3 million, or 97.28% of its total population of 37.31 million at the end of last year.

The remaining Central Java population comprised 594,870 Christians (1.59%), 347,770 Catholics (0.93%), 14,620 Hindus (0.04%), 51,280 Buddhists (0.14%), 1,340 Confucians, and 6,200 adherents of indigenous beliefs.
