Mount Semeru Erupts Early Friday Morning, Alert Level Raised

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 01:24 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 16 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, no visual eruption was observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations from June 7, 2024, 18:00-23:59 WIB, showed 24 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and durations of 70-125 seconds. There was also 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 31 millimeters, an S-P time of 79 seconds, and a duration of 150 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river boundary) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lava flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 919 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 372 recorded events.
