Mount Lewotobi Male Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Plume 1,500 Meters Above Peak

Mount Lewotobi Male in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (23/9/2025) at 08.36 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Male has erupted 35 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 1,500 meters above the peak (3,084 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22.2 millimeters and a duration of 111 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Male is at Level IV (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 23, 2025, from 00.00-06.00 WITA showed 3 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-10.5 millimeters and earthquake durations of 101-242 seconds.

Subsequently, 4 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and earthquake durations of 101-242 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and an earthquake duration of 180 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges communities around Mount Lewotobi Male and visitors/tourists not to engage in any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a sectoral area of 7 kilometers from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Male in the Southwest-Northeast direction.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,286 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,476 times), while Mount Lewotobi Male erupted 597 times.
