Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 400 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 3:21 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 71 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 400 meters above the peak (1,725 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 54 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 16, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 26 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 32-80 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 36 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 16-62 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-4 millimeters and durations of 33-83 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,224 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,020 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 903 times.
