Mount Dukono Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 600 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 08:19 WIT. This is the second eruption in the last week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak, or 1,687 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 17, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 138 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-27 millimeters and durations of 33.39-66.47 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 8 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-14 millimeters, S-P intervals of 10.15-29.07 seconds, and durations of 58.27-88.08 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 2-3 millimeters, predominantly 2 millimeters.

The PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,876 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,072 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 35 times.
