Galang Island, Batam's Largest Area for Coronavirus Patient Isolation

Galang is part of Batam City, covering an area of 2,018.49 square kilometers and inhabited by 17,183 people. This sub-district encompasses 52.4% of Batam City's total area of 3,848.97 square kilometers, making it the largest district.

The public is currently focusing on Galang Island because the government has chosen it as an alternative location for treating infectious diseases. One example is the coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, which has become a global pandemic. The government has decided to reactivate the hospitals in the area after renovations.

Galang Island previously served as a refugee camp for Vietnamese refugees after the civil war from 1979-1997. Therefore, several facilities already exist on the island, including refugee barracks, places of worship, hospitals, and schools, capable of accommodating 250,000 refugees.
