10 Regencies with the Highest Birth Rates in Indonesia

In 2020, there were 416 regencies in Indonesia. Of these, Asmat Regency, Papua Province, had the highest total fertility rate (TFR).

The total fertility rate (TFR) is the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime in a particular region, assuming that her childbearing behavior follows a specific pattern.

Based on data from the 2020 Population Census Long Form by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Asmat Regency had a TFR of 4.22.

This means that, on average, women in this regency are expected to give birth to at least 4 children during their reproductive years.

According to the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), the birth rate is an indicator that can both influence and be influenced by a country's development achievements.

"Countries with better development achievements, such as higher levels of health, education, and economy, tend to have lower birth rates," stated the BKKBN in its module titled *Demographic Processes, Concepts and Fertility Measures*.

"Countries with lower birth rates tend to have better development achievements. Therefore, managing fertility rates is an important policy for improving development achievements," it continued.
