Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Tonight, Volcanic Ash Reaches 600 Meters Above the Summit

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (8/7/2024) at 10:14 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 8 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 600 meters above the peak (2,184 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 223 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on July 8, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 414 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 18 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-21 millimeters and durations of 7-11 seconds, and 4 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.9-17 millimeters, s-p 0.8-1.1 seconds, and durations of 9-11 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,526 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (674 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 322 times.
