Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again in the Early Hours of This Morning (Tuesday, June 18, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 03.21 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 8 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 3,000 meters above the peak (4,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 199 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level IV (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 18, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 22 instances of volcanic tremor with amplitudes of 3-28 millimeters and durations of 34-50 seconds.

Then, there were 14 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.5-4 millimeters and durations of 34-525 seconds, and 1 tornillo earthquake with an amplitude of 3.5 millimeters and a duration of 47 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,173 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (514 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 142 times.
