Mount Marapi Erupted on Sunday Afternoon, Status Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Sunday (July 27, 2025) at 1:44 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 3 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

Eruption visuals were not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters and a duration of 37 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on July 27, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 3 non-harmonic tremors with an amplitude of 1 millimeter and a duration of 112-131 seconds.

Furthermore, 3 local tectonic earthquakes occurred with amplitudes of 1.1-4 millimeters s-p 3.1-4.9 seconds and earthquake durations of 19-132 seconds, as well as 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.4-1.8 millimeters s-p 22.6-84.3 seconds and earthquake durations of 98-190 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and hikers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,334 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,144 times) while Mount Marapi erupted 80 times.
