Warning! Mount Dempo Erupts Again This Morning (Tuesday, August 19, 2025)

Mount Dempo in South Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) at 07:48 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). In the last week, Mount Dempo only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 1,300 meters above the peak (4,473 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30 millimeters and a duration of 112 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Dempo's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 19, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 3 millimeters and a duration of 6 seconds. Additionally, there was 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-1 millimeter, dominantly 0.5 millimeter.

PVMBG advises the public, visitors/tourists not to approach or stay overnight (camp) in the active crater center of Marapi-Mount Dempo within a 1 km radius, and 2 kilometers in the north sector of the crater's opening, considering the crater as the center of eruptions and volcanic gases that can be hazardous to life.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,684 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,277 times) while Mount Dempo erupted 4 times.
