Rice is the commodity that contributes most significantly to the poverty line of the rural population. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics shows that rice contributed 25.35 percent to the rural poverty line in September 2016. Second is tobacco, with a contribution of 10.7 percent, and third is beef, contributing 3.47 percent to the poverty line.
Overall, food commodities contributed 77.06 percent to the rural poverty line, higher than the contribution of non-food commodities at 22.94 percent. Meanwhile, the contribution of food commodities to the urban poverty line was 69.84 percent, while non-food commodities contributed 30.16 percent. This poverty data is processed from the September 2016 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) data.
In September 2016, the number of poor people in Indonesia decreased by 241,000 to 27.76 million people, or 10.7 percent. Of this, the rural poor numbered 17.28 million, or about 13.96 percent, and the urban poor numbered 10.49 million, or 7.73 percent.
