A large-scale war between Israel and Palestine erupted in early October 2023. This war began with an attack by the Palestinian militant group, Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah (Hamas), which bombarded Israeli territory with rockets on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
On Sunday, October 8, 2023, Israel declared war and launched counterattacks. This was Israel's first declaration of war in the last 50 years, since the Yom Kippur War in 1973.
In the first five days of the current Israel-Palestine war, the total number of casualties from both sides reached approximately 2,300, with around 8,900 injured.
"Israel's massive air, sea, and land bombardment continues almost non-stop throughout the Gaza Strip. Palestinian armed groups in Gaza continue to fire rockets into Israeli settlements," said the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in its report on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
According to OCHA data, until Wednesday evening, October 11, 2023, the number of Palestinian casualties reached 1,126 deaths and 5,766 injuries.
Broken down by location, the highest number of Palestinian casualties were in Gaza, with 1,100 deaths and 5,339 injuries. In the West Bank, there were 26 deaths and 427 injuries.
On the other hand, Israeli casualties reached 1,200 deaths and 3,192 injuries.
OCHA also noted that this war has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.
"Israel's massive air, sea, and land bombardment is almost non-stop throughout the Gaza Strip. Many residential buildings in densely populated areas have been targeted, especially in North Gaza and Gaza City, resulting in casualties among the elderly, women, and children," said OCHA on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
"According to the Gaza Ministry of Public Works and Housing, at least 2,540 housing units have been completely destroyed or severely damaged and are uninhabitable, while another 22,850 houses have suffered moderate to minor damage."
"The cumulative number of displaced persons increased by 30 percent in the last 24 hours, now totaling 338,934, with more than two-thirds seeking shelter in UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) shelters," said OCHA.
