Mount Ibu Erupts Tuesday Morning, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 08:39 WIT (West Indonesia Time). This is the second eruption in the past week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to reach 3,000 meters above the peak, or 4,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 175 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 2, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIT showed 23 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2-18 millimeters and durations of 20-53 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 83-397 seconds, and 112 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 11-25 seconds.

The PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists to refrain from activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,381 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (603 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 181 times.
