Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Volcanic Ash Reaches 600 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (September 13, 2024) at 3:52 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 23 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 600 meters above the peak or 2,184 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismicity on September 13, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 1 emission earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 302 seconds.

Then, 1 harmonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 314 seconds, and 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and durations of 9-11 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,681 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,495 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 645 times.
