Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Tonight, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 600 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 10:27 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 38 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 600 meters above the peak (2,184 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 157 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on July 13, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.4-14.8 mm and durations of 58-59 seconds; 10 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-14.8 millimeters and durations of 7-9 seconds; and 3 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 14.8-47.3 millimeters, s-p 1.7-2.7 seconds, and durations of 10-11 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,619 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (692 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 352 times.
