The Indonesian government will renovate and repurpose a former Vietnamese refugee hospital on Galang Island. Located in Batam, Riau Islands, this site is expected to serve as an isolation facility for patients with infectious diseases, including the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The hospital on Galang Island was formerly a refugee camp for Vietnamese citizens after the 1979-1997 civil war. The government chose this location because it is already equipped with various facilities, including refugee barracks, places of worship, a hospital, and schools, capable of accommodating 250,000 refugees.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Galang Island had a population of 17,183 in 2019. This represents 1.5% of Batam's total population. Galang is the second least populous sub-district in Batam City.
