Indonesia's Life Expectancy is Relatively Low in Southeast Asia

Indonesian citizens have a relatively low life expectancy compared to neighboring countries.

This is evident from data from the *World Population Prospects: The 2022 Revision* released by the United Nations (UN).

According to the UN definition, life expectancy at birth is an estimate of the expected lifespan of an individual from the moment of birth.

This figure is often used as an indicator to assess the public health conditions of a region during a specific period.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also states that life expectancy is related to a broad range of dimensions.

"Increases in life expectancy at birth can be linked to a number of factors, including improved living standards, healthier lifestyles, better education, and better quality access to healthcare services," the OECD stated on its official website.

Life expectancy in Indonesia has increased significantly in recent decades.

According to UN data, in 1960 the median life expectancy at birth in Indonesia was 46.45 years. This figure has steadily improved, reaching a median of 68.25 years in 2022.

However, compared to other Southeast Asian countries, this figure is relatively low.

The UN notes that in 2022, the median life expectancy at birth in Singapore was very high, reaching 84.13 years.

Similarly, in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, and the Philippines, the median life expectancy exceeded 70 years.

Meanwhile, life expectancy in other Southeast Asian countries is less than 70 years, as shown in the graph above.
