Mount Dukono Erupts Wednesday Afternoon, Status Remains at Alert

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 11:56 WIT. This is the second eruption in the last week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,200 meters above the peak or 2,287 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on July 10, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 31 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-20 millimeters and durations of 31.41-61.93 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 17 millimeters, S-P arrival time not observed, and a duration of 44.14 seconds; and 4 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-34 millimeters, S-P arrival time of 22.03 seconds, and durations of 76.32-90.12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,562 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (686 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 30 times.
