Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts on Friday Night; Status Remains on Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 10:33 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 10 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on May 31, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 4 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14.8-47.3 millimeters and durations of 121-413 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 rockfall quake with an amplitude of 8.8 mm and a duration of 49 seconds, and 1 emission quake with an amplitude of 27.3 millimeters and a duration of 19 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, and a sectoral 3-kilometer radius in the Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 840 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (334 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 130 times.
