Mount Ibu Erupts on Sunday Afternoon, Status Raised to Highest Alert Level

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (26/1/2025) at 15.06 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 131 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 58 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 26, 2025, from 06.00 to 12.00 WIT showed 13 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 16-28 millimeters and durations of 32-69 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 26 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 25-50 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 8 millimeters and a duration of 122 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 6 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 757 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (369 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 336 times.
