These 10 Regencies Had the Highest Number of Poor People Nationally in March 2021

Poverty is a fundamental social problem that requires government attention. Referring to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the number of poor people is recorded down to the regency/city level to support poverty alleviation strategies throughout Indonesia.

Bogor Regency is the regency/city with the highest number of poor people nationally. Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the poor population in Bogor Regency was 491,240 in March 2021. This figure is the largest compared to the number of poor people in the other 513 regencies/cities.

The next regencies/cities with the highest number of poor people are Brebes Regency, reaching 314,950 people; followed by Garut Regency with 281,360 poor people; Malang Regency with 276,580; and Tangerang Regency with 272,350.

Cirebon Regency also has a significant number of poor people, totaling 271,020. Next is Bandung Regency with 269,180 poor people, Cianjur Regency with 260,020, and Jember and Sampang Regencies with 257,090 and 237,230 respectively.

Of the 10 regencies with the highest number of poor people, five are from West Java, three from East Java, and one each from Central Java and Banten.

Three provinces on the island of Java have the highest number of poor people nationally, coinciding with their large populations. These three provinces are East Java with 4.57 million people living below the poverty line, West Java with 4.19 million, and Central Java with 4.1 million.
