Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Sunday Afternoon; Status Remains on Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 3:00 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 18 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, no visual eruption was observed. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on June 2, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WITA showed 5 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14.8-47.3 millimeters and durations of 101-547 seconds.

Then, there were 2 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.4-8.8 millimeters and durations of 21 seconds, and 6 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-22 millimeters and durations of 7-9 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, and a sectoral 3-kilometer radius in the Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 871 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (353 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 138 times.
