Warning! Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, August 20, 2025)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday (8/20/2025) at 11:34 AM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 5 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed was approximately 600 meters above the peak or 2,023 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 15.5 millimeters and a duration of 36 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 20, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA showed 50 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.7-17 millimeters and durations of 33-58 seconds. Subsequently, there were 39 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.1-7.2 millimeters and durations of 29-45 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and to be aware of the potential danger from rockfall/lava slides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,705 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,287 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 241 times.
