Mount Marapi Erupts Again Early This Morning (Thursday, October 9, 2025)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Thursday (10/9/2025) at 02:21 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi only erupted once.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,200 meters above the peak (4,091 meters above sea level).

The observed ash column was gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 29.4 millimeters and a duration of 42 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on October 9, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB, showed 2 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.1-4.4 millimeters and durations of 31-59 seconds.

Subsequently, 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 0.8 millimeters and a duration of 12 seconds, and 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.2 millimeters s-p 4.9 seconds and a duration of 24 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urged the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,589 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,590 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 108 times.
