Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 1,000 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 05:34 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 11 millimeters and a duration of 67 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 2, 2025, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 119 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-5.9 millimeters and durations of 29-57 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 101 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-north-northeast sector up to 6 kilometers.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 21 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (13 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 2 times.
