Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height Approximately 300 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 06:35 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 5 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 300 meters above the peak or 1,723 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.7 millimeters and a duration of 85 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 27, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 13.6-26.8 millimeters and durations of 90-102 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 90 tremor events with amplitudes of 11.2-26.4 millimeters and durations of 37-127 seconds, and 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 17.7 millimeters and a duration of 12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or conduct activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 810 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (324 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 64 times.
