Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, February 21, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 11:45 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 76 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak or 1,925 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 47 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on February 21, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 29 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-28 millimeters and durations of 41-98 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 16 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-16 millimeters and durations of 19-59 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 4-15 millimeters and durations of 75-113 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,460 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (715 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 638 times.
