Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches 1,200 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 1:54 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 4 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,200 meters above the peak (2,287 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 17, 2025, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 204 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters and durations of 32.32-619.88 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-34 millimeters, s-p 21.57-37.33 seconds, and durations of 72.37-82.53 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-5 millimeters, predominantly 2 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,255 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,032 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 42 times.
