Indonesia's Human Development Continues to Improve

Human development in Indonesia continues to improve. This is reflected in the Human Development Index (HDI), which has shown an upward trend since 2010. Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the national HDI in 2018 was 71.39 on a scale of 0-100. This national HDI increased by 0.58 points (0.82%) from its 2017 level.

A higher index indicates improved human development, while a lower index indicates a decline. An HDI above 70 indicates that Indonesia's human development is in the high category. Seven provinces saw their HDI status upgraded to "medium" in 2018. As a result, no provinces remained in the low category.

Improvements in Indonesian human development are evident in several indicators, namely: newborns in 2018 had a life expectancy of 71.2 years, 0.14 years longer than the previous year; children aged 7 in 2018 had a life expectancy of 12.91 years of education (up to secondary level I), 0.06 years longer than before; the average 25-year-old had completed 8.17 years of education (up to grade IX), 0.07 years longer than the previous year; and per capita expenditure increased by Rp 395,000 to Rp 11,060,000 per year.
