Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, August 29, 2025)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (8/29/2025) at 8:42 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 6 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 400 meters above the peak (1,823 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity moving westward. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 15.9 millimeters and a duration of 41 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 29, 2025, from 12:00-18:00 WITA, showed 4 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.1-5 millimeters and durations of 30-51 seconds.

Additionally, there were 24 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.3-4.1 millimeters and durations of 26-41 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.3 millimeters (s-p unobserved) and a duration of 71 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity, and to be aware of potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,888 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,358 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 251 times.
