The Caspian Sea is the world's largest lake. According to Visual Capitalist, this lake, bordering Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan, covers an area of 371,000 square kilometers (km).
Unlike most lakes, the Caspian Sea contains saltwater. This is because the lake was once part of the ancient Paratethys Sea about 11 million years ago.
Lake Superior ranks second with an area of 82,100 sq km. This freshwater lake is located within the territories of the United States (US) and Canada.
Following is Lake Victoria, located in Africa, with an area of 68,870 sq km. Lake Huron, located on the US-Canada border, ranks fourth with an area of 59,600 sq km.
Then there is Lake Michigan, located in the US, with an area of 58,000 sq km. Followed by Lake Tanganyika from Africa with an area of 32,600 sq km.
Lake Baikal in Russia has an area of 31,500 sq km. Great Bear Lake in northwestern Canada has an area of 31,000 sq km.
Lake Malawi, bordering Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, is ninth with an area of 29,500 sq km. Meanwhile, Great Slave Lake in Canada has an area of 27,000 sq km.
