Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Friday, January 31, 2025)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 1:58 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 102 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 31, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 51 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-23 millimeters and durations of 60-178 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 4-7 millimeters and durations of 42-54 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 8 millimeters and a duration of 146 seconds.

The PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river margin) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lava flows extending up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 935 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions with 456 events.
