Mount Ibu Erupts Early Sunday Morning, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (30/6/2024) at 04.23 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 16 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 4,000 meters above the peak or 5,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be black with thick intensity towards the south and southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 350 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 30, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14-28 millimeters and durations of 160-199 seconds.

Then, there were 14 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 2-19 millimeters and durations of 14-62 seconds, and 7 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 45-473 seconds.

PVMBG advises people around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,342 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (583 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 173 times.
